The Ukrainian figure skater was surprised to be deprived of a scholarship because of participation in the Navka show

Viktor Petrenko, a Ukrainian figure skater and Olympic champion of the 1992 Games, was surprised when Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky was stripped of his scholarship for participating in an ice show by Russian Olympic ice dancing champion Tatiana Navka. The athlete announced this on July 30.

"Honestly, I was surprised. But I'm involved in figure skating, not politics," the Sport24 portal reports the athlete's words.

Zelensky stripped Petrenko of a scholarship in August 2022 for participating in Tatiana Navka's Scarlet Flower ice show in July of the same year.

Petrenko is the 1992 Olympic champion in Albertville in men's single skating. Then he played for the United Team. At the 1988 Games, he won a bronze medal as a member of the USSR national team.

On June 7, the European Arm Wrestling Federation (EAF) fined Ukrainian para-wrestlers Dmitry Lutsyshyn and Leonid Sidorchuk for refusing to listen to the Russian national anthem during the award ceremony at the European Championships in Budapest.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on June 5 that Ukrainian athletes should not close their eyes at the sight of the Russian flag at competitions. Commenting on such gestures, Peskov added that athletes from Ukraine should respect the winners of the competition.
