The object of deterrence in Europe should not be Russia, but NATO and Germany with its revanchist-militaristic ambitions. This was announced on July 30 by Russian Ambassador to Norway Nikolai Korchunov.

"We proceed from the fact that only the North Atlantic Alliance and Germany need deterrence, which has again decided to become the 'leading military power in Europe,'" Korchunov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

The diplomat recalled that such aspirations of the German authorities in the last century twice led to tragic consequences for Russia, Europe and the whole world. In addition, he drew attention to attempts by non-regional NATO members to strengthen their influence in the Arctic and introduce their "confrontational block approaches" to the region

"Representatives of Berlin are particularly zealous in this," Korchunov said.

On the same day, Korchunov noted that Norway was encouraging the build-up of Germany's military presence on its territory. The diplomat also urged Norwegian politicians not to forget the fact that during the Second World War it was Nazi Germany that occupied the territory of Norway, and then the soldiers of the Red Army liberated the country "at the cost of their lives."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in turn, noted the day before that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, if he claims to lead his country in Europe, should be prepared to answer for his words. The minister added that Russia is once again opposing Nazism. According to him, the country is fighting against "direct followers and descendants of the Nazis."
