Fragments of ancient musical instruments found during excavations in Moscow

Fragments of ancient musical instruments were discovered during archaeological excavations in Moscow. This was announced on Wednesday, July 29, by the mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin.

According to him, an iron harp of the XVIII–XIX centuries was found in Kitaygorodsky Passage, a bone flute of the XVII—XVIII centuries was found on Solzhenitsyn Street, and a fragment of a bone flute or pipe of the early XVII century was found in Luzhnetsky Passage. In addition, archaeologists have discovered a rare 17th-century clay whistle toy in the shape of a lamb, covered with green irrigation, on Druzhinnikovskaya Street, the Moscow City News Agency reports.

Sobyanin noted that the findings confirm the important role of musical culture in the life of Muscovites of the past centuries. All the artifacts have already been restored and will soon be donated to the Museum of Moscow.

The mayor also said that since the beginning of 2026, about 3 thousand archaeological finds have been transferred to the museum fund of Russia, and over the past five years — more than 50 thousand.
