- Ukraine has filed an appeal against the IOC's decision to restore the rights of the ROC
Ukraine has filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to reinstate the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). This was announced on July 29 on the website of the Ukrainian National Olympic Committee (NOC).
"The NOC of Ukraine has submitted a Statement of Appeal to the CAS, in which it requests that the IOC's decision be overturned. <...> In its appeal, the NOC of Ukraine draws attention to the fact that back in 2024, the CAS confirmed the legality of the ROC's suspension," the text says.
It is explained that the relevant petition was filed with the assistance of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine on July 28, following the alleged prematurity of the IOC decision by the Ukrainian side.
The IOC temporarily suspended sanctions against athletes from the Russian Federation on July 7. This step, which was positively assessed in the Kremlin, according to Mikhail Degtyarev, Minister of Sports of Russia and head of the Russian Olympic Committee, will help accelerate the process of returning all Russians to the international arena.
On July 14, the Estonian Ministry of Culture announced its intention to deprive the IOC of funding for the decision on Russia. At that time, it was noted that eight more European states supported the possibility of sanctions. A day later, a representative of the organization said that the decision on the return of the Russian Federation was firm and would not be changed due to threats from the European Union.
