The expert explained the US demarche against France in the UN Security Council

Pavel Timofeev, Head of the Regional Problems and Conflicts Sector at the IMEMO of the Russian Academy of Sciences, explained the US demarche against France at the UN Security Council on Wednesday, July 29.

In an interview with the Mail News, the specialist linked the diplomatic conflict with the diverging positions of France and the United States on the Middle East. According to him, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has repeatedly criticized Washington and Tel Aviv for their actions during the conflict with Iran.

The expert noted that Paris opposes the forceful and pro-Israeli course of the United States, relying on international humanitarian law. The support of the Turk from European countries, in his opinion, indicates France's desire to pursue such a policy together with its EU partners.

Timofeev believes that France is trying to emphasize the independence of the European Union in Middle East policy, giving priority to diplomatic methods. According to him, the lack of progress in the US negotiations with Iran, risks to Europe's energy security and disagreements between Washington and Brussels on the issue of support for Ukraine create additional tension.

At the same time, the expert does not expect a serious break in relations between the EU and the United States, since their positions largely coincide on key issues. He also suggested that public disagreements between French leader Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump would persist until the end of the first president's term.

The incident occurred after a disagreement over the extension of the powers of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk. Despite the fact that the UN General Assembly re-elected him for a second four-year term, the United States opposed this decision. In response, the French mission to the United Nations in Geneva sharply criticized Washington's position.
