The expert explained the change in the rules of admission to universities due to the Olympics

A high result of the Unified State Exam (USE) does not always guarantee admission to a budget place due to the reduction in the number of places, increased competition and the advantages provided by Olympiads and other educational trajectories. Anton Petrovich Zagorsky, a tutor in Russian language and literature, a philologist, told Izvestia about this on July 28.

According to the expert, the situation is particularly difficult in humanitarian areas, where competition is growing not only for budget but also for commercial jobs. Additional factors include the reduction of preferential educational programs and a large number of preferential categories of applicants.

"Education in our country is the only social elevator, it is not surprising that parents and applicants put so much on it," said Zagorsky.

The philologist explained that the Olympiads create a separate priority entry route. Winners and prize-winners can get the opportunity to enter out of competition or an advantage when enrolling in the budget, which is why even high-scoring EXAM results do not always allow them to take the first positions in the ranking.

In 2026, applied technical specialties have surpassed IT in popularity: this trend will continue for at least five years, experts say.

According to the expert, modern applicants have more opportunities for preparation: they study with tutors, receive information about competitions and Olympiads from universities, and many competitions are available to participants from different regions of Russia.

Zagorsky recommends that students use several directions at once when preparing for admission: pay attention to the Unified State Exam, participate in Olympiads and attend specialized schools at universities. Such programs help to get acquainted in advance with the requirements of the faculties and additional tests.

At the same time, Zagorsky believes that there is no need to change the basic university admission system, but it is necessary to increase the number of budget places in sought-after specialties, since admission is becoming less affordable for many applicants.

According to a sociological study conducted by the RANEPA Presidential Academy on July 19, economics, finance and management, information and computer technology, and medicine have become the most sought-after areas of study in Russian higher education institutions.
