Volvo to develop luxury sedan with Geely support
Volvo is preparing to launch a new flagship luxury sedan, internally codenamed 561. The model is positioned as a competitor to the popular Maextro S800 in China and will surpass the current flagship Volvo S90. It will be the first D-segment executive sedan in Volvo's 100-year history. This was reported on July 28 by 36kr, citing industry sources.
According to him, in order to develop a luxury Volvo sedan, Geely has mobilized resources by suspending or postponing similar projects for the Galaxy, Lynk brands. & Co and Zeekr.
The development of the new product is overseen by the new president and CEO of Volvo China, Duan Jianjun, who transferred from the Chinese division of Mercedes-Benz in May. Over the past 13 years, he has helped Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Maybach gain a near-dominant position in the Chinese D-segment sedan market.
As part of the project, Volvo China is responsible for defining product characteristics, monitoring safety standards, and certifying the vehicle, while Geely's development team develops electrical systems, vehicle design, and supply chain management. The new product will be launched in China.
The day before, the BMW X5 crossover of the new, fifth generation made its debut in China, the global version of which was introduced in June. Especially for the Chinese market, in accordance with the requests of local customers, the car received an extended wheelbase and other features.
