The State Duma proposed to increase the tax deduction for the purchase of housing

The amount of tax deductions for the purchase of real estate and mortgage interest payments should be increased. This was stated on Tuesday, July 28, by Dmitry Gusev, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Control (Fair Russia).

According to the parliamentarian, the current support measures need to be reviewed due to the current situation in the housing market and rising inflation.

"Let there be a tax deduction for the second apartment. And taking into account the increase in inflation, I think that the amount of tax deduction should be increased. And it can be increased," Gusev said in an interview with TASS.

The established limits of property tax deductions have not changed since 2014. To date, the maximum amount from which income tax can be refunded when buying or building housing is 2 million rubles. When paying interest on a mortgage loan, the maximum deduction amount reaches 3 million rubles, the agency clarifies.

With a standard personal income tax rate of 13%, citizens can return up to 260 thousand rubles for the purchase of an object and up to 390 thousand rubles for interest paid to the bank. According to TASS, the right to a tax refund is now granted to Russians once in a lifetime. In the case of the purchase of real estate, the limit of 260 thousand rubles can be exhausted in transactions with several objects, however, the deduction for mortgage interest is strictly tied to one apartment or house.

Alexey Govyrin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, announced on July 18 that Russian citizens will be entitled to a tax deduction for contributions paid under long-term voluntary life insurance contracts starting from September 1, 2026. This measure applies to policies issued on January 1, 2025.
