Putin and Pashinyan discussed the importance of holding a referendum in Armenia as soon as possible

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed holding a referendum on the republic's possible accession to the European Union during a telephone conversation on July 27. This was announced by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"They stressed the need to hold a referendum in Armenia as soon as possible to determine which way the Armenians want to go," Peskov said, answering a question from Izvestia.

According to him, the Russian leader referred to the statement of the heads of the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), adopted at the summit in Astana on May 29.

Pashinyan noted that the vote can take place only after the official application for membership in the European Union and the transition to practical steps. At the same time, the Armenian government confirmed its intention to resolve emerging issues with Moscow in the format of an open partnership dialogue.

The conversation between Putin and Pashinyan took place on July 27 at the initiative of Yerevan, the Armenian government announced on its website. It is noted that the sides exchanged views on the problems that have arisen in the field of economic relations, in particular in connection with restrictions on the export of Armenian goods to Russia.
