Modern medicine has postponed the onset of functional old age: today, 60-year-old patients correspond to 50-year-old people who lived two generations ago. This was stated to Izvestia by otorhinolaryngologist, chief physician of the Scandinavian Health Center Elena Ignatenko.

"This was made possible by mass monitoring of blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing the number of smokers, as well as the development of vaccination. An important role is played by medical examination, which makes it possible to detect diseases before complaints appear," explained the interlocutor of the editorial office.

Nevertheless, as for the age and preservation of vital body systems, according to the doctor, the basic resource of organs in humans is the same as in previous generations.

"Cells divide with the same limitations. Collagen, a protein that holds together the skin's skeleton and vascular walls, is synthesized according to the same pattern. And the nephrons, the filtering units of the kidney, do not recover, as they did not recover from our grandmothers," explained Elena Ignatenko.
