Mechanically rereading a textbook does not always help students memorize information. For a solid assimilation of the material, it is not the number of repetitions that is more important, but active work with it. Artyom Bulatov, a clinical psychologist, stressologist, and trauma therapist at the Gazetnoye School — USE Center, told Izvestia about this on July 28.

According to the expert, repeated reading only creates a feeling of familiarity with the topic. It seems to the child that he has memorized everything, however, when answering at the blackboard or on a test, the necessary formulations may not be reproduced.

"During cramming, a student receives ready-made information, but does not learn how to apply knowledge. This is especially noticeable in subjects where you need not only to know the rule, but also to use it in a new situation. For example, a student may learn a formula but fail to solve a problem," the expert explained.

Bulatov advised replacing constant re-reading with active playback. To do this, close the textbook and try to retell the topic in your own words, answer questions or write down the main thoughts. This approach helps the brain to extract information on its own and strengthens memory.

After trying to reproduce it, it is important to check the textbook, correct the errors and repeat the material. At the same time, you should not immediately prompt the child with the answer — a short pause helps him to find a solution on his own.

In addition, the psychologist stated that it is most effective to repeat the material at intervals. You can return to the topic in a few hours, then the next day and a few days later. This approach helps to consolidate knowledge better than trying to learn everything in one evening.

The expert also recommended linking knowledge with practice: solving problems, coming up with examples, explaining the topic to other people. Questions that require reasoning help to test not only memory, but also understanding of the material. When preparing at home, you should first make sure that the child understands the topic, then ask him to reproduce the basic ideas without a textbook and only then sort out the mistakes.

According to Bulatov, the effectiveness of repetition is determined not by the amount of time spent on a textbook, but by whether a student can explain the material and apply it in a new situation. It is active work with information that turns memorization into understanding.

On July 19, Shamil Akhmadullin, a teacher-psychologist and co-founder of the Umnoshola, said that in the last weeks of the summer holidays, parents should not turn school preparation into an intensive educational marathon. It is much more effective to develop a child's attention, memory, thinking and independence through games and daily activities. According to the expert, it is not necessary to force the child to study by force.
