The cub was born to domestic yaks at the Moscow Zoo

Assol and Boris's pet yaks have given birth to their first cub at the Moscow Zoo. You can see the baby in the aviary on the old territory between the enclosures of big cats and brown hyenas. This was announced on Thursday, July 23, by the press service of the Moscow Department of Culture.

Svetlana Akulova, General director of the Moscow Zoo, said that the female was born with a weight of 17 kg. Now she feeds mainly on her mother's milk, but she is already trying hay, willow branches, muesli and specialized food for herbivores. According to Akulova, the cub has almost doubled its body weight in two weeks. The baby has a pale gray color, and in the first year of life, young yaks practically do not leave their mother.

The domestic yak is one of the largest representatives of the Polorhynchus family, native to Tibet. Animals were domesticated about three thousand years ago. They are distinguished by their thick fur, which protects them well from the cold, so they are able to live in the highlands at an altitude of up to 6 thousand meters, the Moscow city news agency reports.

Today, domestic yaks are bred in many Asian countries, with about 90% of the population concentrated in Tibet. In Russia, these animals can be found in zoos, as well as in farms in Tuva, Altai and Buryatia.

In the Moscow Zoo, the yaks have successfully adapted to the capital's climate. In hot weather, irrigation systems operate in their enclosures, as well as carding machines and suspensions, writes Moscow 24.
