Even small expenses on oneself can cause feelings of guilt, despite a stable income and competent budget planning. On July 25, Rocketbank experts told Izvestia about this, and in the course of their research they found out that the desire for financial discipline can increase anxiety and internal conflict when spending on personal pleasures.

The study found that one of the largest groups of participants was the so-called "self-blaming hedonists." These are people who know how to plan expenses and keep a budget, but have forgotten how to enjoy small pleasures without internal discomfort. A new book, a trip to a cafe, cosmetics, a ticket to a concert or a short trip quickly cause feelings of guilt.

"Not because there wasn't enough money. But because pleasure didn't seem like a good enough reason to spend money on it," the experts noted.

At the same time, emotional spending is usually not associated with large expenses. Most often we are talking about familiar things: hobbies, clothes, books, small trips or gifts to yourself. On average, such purchases account for about 6.7% of income. The main purpose of shopping is to recuperate after a difficult week, a change of scenery, or emotional relief.

As experts have noted, the paradox lies in the fact that guilt is more common among people who know how to save, plan expenses and set long-term financial goals. The higher the internal control, the more difficult it is to allow yourself a little pleasure without feeling like breaking the rules. The researchers note that many have at least once refused a purchase that could make them happier.

In recent years, the conversation about personal finance has changed: the focus has shifted to savings, investments and financial discipline, experts added. However, an excessive desire to be responsible can lead to internal conflict, when even small expenses on oneself are perceived as a weakness or a mistake.

Andrey Smirnov, an expert on the stock market at BCS World of Investments, said on July 19 that in order to accumulate 1 million rubles, it is necessary to clearly define the goal, audit the budget and choose the appropriate tool for savings. To achieve this goal, the expert recommended opening a separate account, including a brokerage account, for the acquisition of low-risk assets. As an example, the analyst cited long-term federal loan bonds (OFZ). According to him, their profitability exceeds 16.1%, which can significantly accelerate the achievement of financial results.
