Russian Foreign Ministry: negative scenario in the Middle East may threaten energy security

A negative scenario in the Middle East could threaten the energy and food security of the entire world. This was announced on July 23 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

She noted that as a result of the exchange of blows between the warring parties, serious damage is being caused to the civilian infrastructure of Iran and a number of other states in the Persian Gulf zone. According to the diplomat, this poses a direct threat to navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

"The development of the situation in a negative scenario is fraught with critical consequences for international energy and food security," the diplomat said in a statement on the agency's website.

In this regard, Moscow calls on the parties to the conflict to refrain from taking steps that could expand the geography of the confrontation. Zakharova stressed that the Russian side insists on resolving the situation through diplomatic means and is ready to facilitate this process.

On July 22, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Republican budget resolution, which allows for further allocation of funds for a military operation against Iran under a simplified budget procedure. The document was adopted by a minimal majority of votes. The initiative was opposed by two representatives of the Republican Party, among others.

The Wall Street Journal reported on the same day that the United States was deploying additional forces and weapons to the Middle East amid a possible expansion of military operations against Iran. According to the newspaper, military, medical personnel and equipment are being sent to the region.
