Pavel Gusak, a psychiatrist and head of the Medical and Psychological Department of the Three Sisters Early Rehabilitation Clinic, told on Wednesday, July 22, what mistakes relatives of a person who has suffered a stroke, serious injury or serious surgery can make.

One of the most common mistakes of a patient's relatives is that they try to do literally everything for him, but rehabilitation is not aimed at making it easier for a person here and now, but so that after a while he can do without outside help, he explained in an interview with Health Mail.

He stressed that if a patient is able to perform an action on his own, even if slowly, imperfectly and with several attempts, then it is important to give him this opportunity.

Every time a person brushes his teeth, puts on a T-shirt, or moves from bed to chair, he not only regains motor skills, he regains a sense of control over his own life.

Many relatives, after a serious illness of a loved one, begin to live in a constant monitoring mode. There is anxiety and a desire to help behind these words, but the patient may perceive them as pressure or a signal that he is not trying hard enough, the doctor warned.

In modern rehabilitation, a psychologist works not only with the patient, but also with his relatives. The work of a specialist helps a family to rebuild relationships in which there is a place not only for illness, but also for ordinary life. It is very important that relatives do not turn into just nurses or supervisors. After a stroke or injury, a person still needs conversations, walks together, family traditions, and the opportunity to feel like a part of their usual life, not just a patient.

Rehabilitation often requires a variety of specialists: doctors, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, nurses and, of course, family.

At the same time, the task of relatives is not to replace specialists, but to create an atmosphere at home in which a person can gradually regain independence, Gusak concluded.

On the same day, Natalia Koryavtseva, a neurologist, medical expert at the ORBI Stroke Foundation, and a member of the All-Russian Society of Neurology, told Izvestia that, according to international data, the proportion of strokes in people under 50 years of age is about 10-15% of all cases.

In turn, cardiologist, therapist, and somnologist Irina Chekmareva said on July 16 that basic monitoring includes blood pressure measurement, cholesterol and glucose determination, clinical blood analysis, chest X-ray, ECG, and a visit to the dentist. In familial cases of heart attack, stroke or cancer, an extended examination may be required, RT reports.

On July 8, Olga Kondratenko, a nutritionist, nutritionist, and expert at SOLGAR, gave tips to help protect against heart attacks and strokes in the summer. She noted that, first of all, it is necessary to maintain a sufficient level of hydration: drink 40 ml of water per 1 kg of body weight. It is also important to adhere to a balanced diet — it is necessary to include a lot of protein and fruits in the summer diet, and it is better to limit trans fats and carbohydrates, NSN reports.
