The NYT stated the inability of the West to force Russia to abandon its position

No amount of Western action can force Moscow to abandon its position. This was stated on July 22 by Hannah Knott, director of the Eurasian Nuclear Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Research in Monterey, in an article for The New York Times (NYT).

"Many expected Russia to become the sworn enemy [of the West]. But soon it became clear to her opponents that the country was not going anywhere," Notte said.
