Politico noted the despondency in the EU due to the inability to agree on sanctions against Russia

The European Union (EU) is disheartened due to the fact that they cannot agree among themselves and agree on a new package of anti-Russian sanctions, which will be the 21st in a row. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on July 22, citing a survey it conducted among diplomatic officials.

"What are their chances of success (in adopting sanctions against Russia — Ed.) before the summer holidays? No one knows. The interviewed ambassadors were disheartened," the article says.

It is noted that Greece is the main blocker of the introduction of appropriate measures, where some of the newspaper's interlocutors even intend to "call" in order to discuss this issue. Diplomats also express dismay at other potential threats to their bill, the fate of which is now "difficult to predict."

Politico added that last week their interlocutors spent three whole days discussing the 21st sanctions package, but they did not come to a consensus.

Due to a number of controversial points, it will not be accepted until the fall, experts say.

Two days earlier, Politico learned that the European Commission is ready to take into account Greece's position on anti-Russian sanctions and adjust some points of the draft for it. It was explained that Athens does not like the extension of measures to transport Russian liquefied natural gas, as this threatens significant damage to Greek transport and shipping companies.

On the same day, the Financial Times newspaper stated that France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Portugal were also blocking the decision. The current situation in the EU, as noted in the publication at the time, is a serious crisis for the entire sanctions approach.
