- The doctor spoke about the symptoms of thrombosis and methods of prevention in the heat.
Cardiologist, functional diagnostics doctor, Ph.D. Elvira Khachirova on Tuesday, July 21, told how to prevent thrombosis.
In conversation with aif.ru The expert noted that heat can increase the risk of thrombosis, since blood becomes more viscous due to fluid loss, and vasodilation and prolonged lack of movement contribute to its stagnation.
According to the doctor, people over 40-45 years old, patients with varicose veins, obesity, cardiovascular and oncological diseases, pregnant women, as well as those who have undergone surgery, injuries or thrombosis are at risk. Smoking, sedentary lifestyle and dehydration also increase the likelihood of blood clots.
For prevention, the specialist recommended moving more, not sitting or standing still for more than an hour, following a drinking regime, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, and using compression knitwear if indicated. Anticoagulants should be taken only as prescribed by a doctor.
Khachirova warned that the alarming symptoms of thrombosis are unilateral swelling of the leg, pain, a feeling of heaviness and discoloration of the skin. In case of sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, dizziness or loss of consciousness, it is necessary to urgently call an ambulance, as these signs may indicate pulmonary embolism.
During long trips and flights, the doctor advised drinking water regularly, getting up and warming up every hour, doing leg exercises and not sitting cross-legged.
Cardiologist Sergey Vasiliev said the day before that thrombosis occurs due to a violation of blood clotting, and in summer its risk is increased by heat and dehydration, writes RIAMO. Due to fluid loss, the blood becomes more viscous, which contributes to the formation of blood clots, notes 360.ru . Therapist Tatiana Vinogradova, in an interview with RT on July 18, also warned of an increased risk of blood clots in the heat.
In June, doctor Igor Zolotukhin said that within the next month from the moment of thrombosis, there is a 6% risk that the blood clot will break off, enter the pulmonary artery and lead to death. With timely access to a specialist and the start of taking anticoagulants, the likelihood of death decreases dramatically.
In turn, phlebologist, surgeon, MD Vadim Bogachev told Pravda.Ru that venous thrombosis can occur due to heredity, injury, dehydration, infections, and even certain medications. When the first symptoms appear, it is necessary to consult a specialist as soon as possible and undergo a diagnosis.
Prior to this, cardiovascular surgeon Al-Youssef Nadeem Nasr warned that heat increases the risk of thrombosis. To avoid this, you should drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day. It should be pure water or mineral water, but not alcohol, according to NSN.
