FIFA called Paredes' red card erroneous after a fight in the 2026 World Cup final
The International Football Federation (FIFA) has removed from the information system "erroneous information" about the red card of Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes after the World Cup final against Spain. This was announced on July 20 by the BBC Sport broadcasting company with reference to the organization.
Paredes had a scuffle with the Spanish players after the final whistle of the lost World Cup final. The Argentine first grabbed Spanish defender Eric Garcia by the throat, and then pushed midfielder Gavi. It was up to the Argentine national team teammates to calm the former Zenit St. Petersburg football player.
Initially, the FIFA commentator system indicated that the referee of the 2026 World Cup final, Slavko Vincic, had removed Paredes for a post-match brawl. However, this information was later deleted, according to the BBC. The organization confirmed to the broadcaster that the referee did not show Paredes a red card and "no disciplinary measures were applied to the player."
At the same time, the FIFA disciplinary committee appointed a prosecutor for disciplinary and ethical issues to investigate the brawl after the final whistle. It involved not only Paredes, but also, presumably, right-back Nahuel Molina, winger Thiago Almada and assistant coach of Argentina Roberto Ayala.
The players and coaches involved in the altercation may face disqualification, and the Argentine Football Association may face a fine. In addition, an investigation was previously initiated against the Argentine national team because of a provocative banner about the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) after winning the semi-finals, when the team knocked England out of the tournament.
