- At a meeting with the Foreign Minister of Laos, Lavrov praised the relations between the two countries.
Russia highly appreciates the regular bilateral relations between Moscow and Vientiane. This was announced on July 21 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting with Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavan Phomvihan, opening talks in the capital of the Philippines.
"We value our relations, we value regular contacts between our leaders. Last year marked the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and the 15th anniversary of the strategic partnership agreement is coming soon," he said on the sidelines of ASEAN events.
The Russian Foreign Minister recalled the visit of Lao President Thonglong Sisoulit to Moscow in 2026, who took part in the celebrations on the occasion of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. In turn, Lao Prime Minister Sonxai Siphandon participated in the recent Russia-ASEAN summit in Kazan, which took place from June 17 to 19.
Lavrov announced that during the meeting in Manila, the ministers will discuss what contribution they can "make to the effective implementation" of the tasks set by the leadership of the two countries. His colleague from Laos also described the high-level contacts as "very successful."
On June 15, Russia and Laos signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of peaceful atom. Alexey Likhachev, head of Rosatom, added that of all the areas of cooperation with Laos, the project to deploy small onshore nuclear power using RITM-200 reactors is of the greatest interest.
