- The scientist warned of a gradual change in the Earth's magnetic field before storms
The Earth's magnetic field will begin to change gradually starting on July 21. Astrophysicist Alexey Rudnev told about this on Monday, July 20, commenting on the upcoming magnetic storms.
"Monday's calmness should not be misleading. The solar wind is an extremely volatile substance, and a lull often precedes a dense stream of particles, which causes fluctuations in the Earth's magnetic field," the expert said in an interview with Pravda.Ru .
According to him, the situation will begin to change on Tuesday, July 21. The chances of maintaining a calm environment drop to 49%. Although the indicators will remain around 2 points during the day, a noticeable movement will begin in the evening.
At about 21:00, the Kp index (a planetary index that evaluates the disturbance of the Earth's magnetic field in real time on a scale from 0 to 9) will reach 3 points — this is a borderline condition, Rudnev noted.
Earlier this day, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that G1–G2 magnetic storms caused by a fast wind flow from the solar coronal hole are expected on Earth from July 22, the Moscow City News agency reports.
An increase in disturbances is expected on the night of July 22, it will last at least a day, and storms of the G1–G2 level may form at the peak, RT notes. The laboratory clarified that the probability of severe storms, G3 level and higher, is about 5%.
Geomagnetic disturbances will begin to intensify in the afternoon of the specified day, and peak activity is expected around 18:00. Life.Ru .
The Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences published a forecast of magnetic storms from July 20 to 26, 2026, according to the website. kp.ru .
