G1–G2 magnetic storms are expected on Earth on July 22 due to a coronal hole in the Sun. This was reported by the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI RAS and the ISSF SB RAS.
"In this case, the Sun decided not to torment forecasters and "painted" a hole from pole to pole, so you definitely won't pass by," the experts clarified in their Telegram channel.
A stream of fast solar wind will reach the planet on July 22. Usually coronal holes are compact, and there is a chance that the wind will pass by. However, this time the hole stretches from pole to pole, so a plasma impact is inevitable.
The growth of disturbances will begin on the night of July 21-22 and will last at least a day. Storms of the G1–G2 level are possible at the peak, the probability of more severe storms of G3 and higher is estimated at 5%
On the same day, the Institute of Applied Geophysics reported possible Class M solar flares on July 20 and 21. Experts noted that Class M flashes belong to the penultimate power level. When solar plasma is released, they can cause magnetic storms after reaching the Earth.
