New British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has promised the country's citizens to make the "biggest changes" in politics and the economy over the past 40 years while he holds office. Burnham announced his program in his first speech on behalf of the head of government from the rostrum of the official residence of Downing Street on July 20.

"We will make this a turning point for the UK by making the most ambitious changes in the last 40 years, creating a new political model and a new economic model," he said. The speech is broadcast on The Guardian newspaper's website.

The politician stated that in the 1980s, Great Britain made several wrong turns in the development of its political system, when power was decentralized and deindustrialized. Back then, no one could find the right solutions for the reforms.

"I am fully aware that I am the sixth person in the last 10 years to walk down this street (Downing Street. — ed.), and the seventh Prime Minister since 2016, this is a reason for reflection and new decisions. This requires my generation of politicians to raise the bar and take on a new challenge. Britain must show the world that we can regain stability, and it is our task to make politics work, to make it work better," Burnham said.

According to the Prime Minister, British policy should be more focused "on cooperation and problem solving, rather than on scoring points."

Political scientist Alexander Dudchak, a leading researcher at the Institute of CIS Countries, commented to Izvestia that Burnham's appointment would not lead to noticeable changes in the country's foreign and domestic policy. The expert also explained that changes in the UK's relations with Russia should not be expected. According to him, London will maintain its support for Ukraine and continue to pursue its previous foreign policy line.

On July 9, Burnham announced his candidacy for the post of leader of the Labor Party. On the same day, former British Deputy Minister of Defense Alistair Carnes announced his support for his candidacy. Later, on July 17, Burnham was announced as the new leader of the party, and on July 20 he assumed the post of Prime Minister of Great Britain.
