EC fined AliBaba for selling counterfeit products

The European Commission (EC) has fined Alibaba, the owner of the AliExpress marketplace, 550 million euros for selling "illegal products," Politico newspaper reported on July 20.

"There were a lot of counterfeit products, unsafe toys and dangerous cosmetics on AliExpress," said Henna Virkkunen, EC Deputy Chairman for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy.

She noted that illegal goods continued to be available for purchase on the platform, even after it became known that they "did not meet [European] standards."

At the same time, the AliExpress representative office denied the accusations and said that the company "has been and remains firmly committed to fulfilling its obligations, and significant resources have been invested in risk assessment and mitigation, product safety and consumer protection."

The Berliner Zeitung newspaper reported on July 1 that the European Union (EU) has decided to impose a customs duty of €3 on all low-cost parcels from countries outside the bloc. It was noted that the measure is aimed at combating competition from the Shein, Temu and AliExpress marketplaces faced by European retailers.
