The psychologist spoke about the reasons for the fans' strong feelings.
Fans may perceive the defeat of their favorite team as their own failure due to the temporary weakening of psychological boundaries and the inclusion of the club in a person's self-image. Psychologist, existential psychotherapist and mediator Anna Vasilyeva told Izvestia about this on July 20.
This condition is associated with the mechanisms of fusion, group identification and the illusion of control. During the match, the fans' attention is focused on one field and one player, and the general rhythm of the crowd enhances the sense of unity.
"The game and the team become not just an object of love and admiration, but a part of ourselves," Vasilyeva explained.
When winning, a person can perceive the success of the team as confirmation of the correctness of their own choice. In defeat, shame arises, because failure demonstrates vulnerability to others.
"With a healthy identification, the joy or disappointment of defeat lasts an hour or an evening, it's a short period of time. And with pathological dependence, a person gets stuck in these experiences," the psychologist noted.
Among the alarming signs, she named prolonged anger, aggression, narrowing of the circle of friends and loss of other interests.
Sports rituals help reduce anxiety about unpredictable results. Matching certain clothes or actions with a victory can reinforce the illusion that a fan is able to influence the outcome of a match. With a healthy identification, a person understands that the outcome of the game does not determine his life.
On July 6, Irina Krashkina, a psychotherapist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), Candidate of Medical Sciences, reported that the constant return to painful memories can negatively affect not only the emotional state, but also physical health. According to the expert, memories play an important role in a person's life: they help to keep in touch with the past, draw conclusions from their own experience and form a personality. However, sometimes past events start to take up too much space in your thoughts.
