Magyar supported lowering the electoral age limit in Hungary to 16 years

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said on July 18 that he would support lowering the voting age in the country to 16.

"I am convinced that today the vast majority of people under the age of 18 are also sufficiently prepared and informed to have a say in our common decisions. For my part, I would support lowering the voting age to 16 in the constitutional process," he wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to Magyar, the population's interest in political processes and public life has recently increased in the country, and more people than ever are watching broadcasts of parliamentary meetings.

State media have begun to soften their tone towards the opposition and the EU, but systemic changes are still far away.

On July 18, Hungarian President Tamas Szuyok signed an amendment to the country's constitution providing for the early termination of his term as head of state. He explained that he does not have the constitutional tools to counteract the amendment adopted earlier by the national Parliament. According to the document, the powers of the head of state will expire at midnight on Monday, July 20.
