The UN reported on the absence of regions free from terrorist attacks.

There are no regions in the world that have not been subjected to terrorist attacks. This was announced on July 18 by Alexander Zuev, Acting Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) for Counterterrorism.

"Unfortunately, terrorist threats are being transformed and changing, but they exist all over the world, and today there is not a single region that would not be susceptible to terrorist attacks," he said in an interview with TASS.

According to Zuev, the priority regions for the work of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office at the moment are West Africa and the Sahel, as well as the Middle East. In addition, work is being carried out in South and Southeast Asia. He explained that the attention to Africa is due to serious reasons: last year, over 50% of deaths from terrorist attacks in the world occurred in this region.

Commenting on the escalation in the Middle East, Zuev explained that the situation is gradually stabilizing, but attacks in Iraq and Syria continue. The UN is working with the governments of these countries, including discussing ongoing threats.

"I recently met with the head of Syrian intelligence, who came to New York for our high-level counterterrorism week. We also discussed these issues with him. They are very worried because their situation is not only politically unstable, but also because terrorist threats still persist," he shared.

Zuev also said that citizens of dozens of countries, including people from Central Asia, are in camps in Syria and Iraq. Together with the Governments of the region, progress has been made in the repatriation and reintegration of people, but the process has not yet been completed. The UN representative stressed that no region of the world can consider itself fully protected from terrorist threats.
