Metallurgist's Day was established in the USSR on September 28, 1957 by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. The document fixed a transitional date for the new professional holiday — the third Sunday in July.

The appearance of the holiday was a tribute to the employees of the industry, whose role has increased significantly in the 20th century. Metallurgist's Day was first celebrated on July 20, 1958. After the collapse of the USSR, it remained in Russia, as well as in a number of CIS countries where metallurgy remains an important part of industry, for example, in Belarus and Kazakhstan.

The history of the profession itself in Russia began long before the advent of the official holiday. Blacksmithing existed back in the pre-Petrine era, but the reforms of Peter the Great gave a powerful impetus to the industry. For the army, navy, artillery, and construction, the country needed more and more iron, copper, and other metals. At the beginning of the 18th century, mining industries were actively developing, factories were built in the Urals and in the Olonets Region, mining schools were opened, and a professional environment was formed.

By the middle of the 18th century, Russia had become one of the world leaders in iron smelting. Ural factories supplied metal not only for the domestic market, but also for export. Metallurgy gradually became not a craft of individual small enterprises, but a large industrial system on which defense, trade and urban development depended.
