Experts reported fake websites of foreign telecom operators during the peak holidays

Fraudsters are actively faking the websites of foreign telecom operators during the peak of the tourist holiday season, given the increasing demand for mobile Internet among travelers. Kaspersky Lab experts informed Izvestia about this on July 20.

Russians vacationing abroad have been warned about the risk of being deceived: according to their data, schemes to deceive buyers of SIM cards and mobile communication services are common in different countries of the world. The attackers disguise themselves as major regional and international operators, creating fake resources that are almost indistinguishable from the official ones.

Through fake pages on the Internet, they intend to lure users out of personal and financial data in order to steal money later or use the information they receive to scam or hack accounts.

Kaspersky Lab cited the use of the name of the British multinational telecommunications company Vodafone, which operates in Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania, as an example of fake websites. Fake resources offer you to enter your phone number and credentials.

"One of these sites reproduces almost exactly the original Vodafone account login page — because of this, it can be extremely difficult to recognize a fake. Entering authorization data or payment information on such resources threatens to lose money or data, and may also lead to a wave of spam and fraudulent calls," the experts said.

Experts also found fake pages disguised as the websites of the international telecommunications company Ooredoo, which operates in North Africa, the Middle East and the South‑East Asia, and the Asian telecom operator The Singtel Group. Phishing resources allegedly allow you to top up your mobile Internet account, but in fact, attackers steal personal data and bank card details in this way.

Evgeny Masharov, a member of the commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation for the public examination of draft laws and other regulations, reported on June 29 that during the summer holidays, fraudsters began sending messages on behalf of airlines and ticket sales services, as well as posting fake rental ads to steal money and personal data.
