The wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez Begogna Gomez will appear before a jury on charges of abuse of influence and embezzlement. The corruption charges against the first lady were dropped. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on July 16, citing a court ruling.

A Madrid court has cleared Gomez of a third charge of business corruption and overturned a lower court ruling prohibiting her from leaving the country, obliging her to regularly appear in court and hand over her passport. However, the court retained the bulk of the case against her, which became the most serious legal challenge faced by the family and close associates of the Spanish prime minister, the report said.

The court's decision was made in response to an appeal filed by the defense of the first Lady of Spain. The lawyers asked that all charges against Gomez be dropped and that the rulings previously issued by the lower court be overturned. The petition was only partially granted.

The newspaper El Pais reported on April 20 that the plaintiff in the case is the association Hazte Oir ("Let them hear you"). Representatives of the organization also appealed to the court with a request to summon the head of government, Pedro Sanchez, to testify.

Bloomberg reported on April 13 that Sanchez's wife was accused of corruption. The publication noted that the government has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing by Gomez. It is also indicated that the charges against her increase the political pressure on Sanchez. The investigation later requested 24 years in prison for Gomez. She is charged with corruption in the business sector, abuse of office, illegal enrichment and embezzlement.
