Oncologist, PhD Evgeny Cheremushkin told whether sports injuries and overloads can trigger the development of malignant tumors.

In conversation with aif.ru On Thursday, July 16, the expert noted that injury alone cannot cause cancer in a healthy person. However, if there is already a hidden tumor in the body, the damage can accelerate the course of the disease.

The expert explained that under normal physical exertion, athletes do not take more risks than others. But if the neoplasm has already formed and gone unnoticed, the injury can provoke its rapid progression. In such cases, so-called pathological fractures often occur when the bone breaks in the place affected by the tumor.

Cheryomushkin also noted that young athletes are more likely to have tumors characteristic of the period of active growth of the body. According to him, at this age, the risk of developing tumors of connective tissue, including bone and soft tissue sarcomas, as well as lymphomas, is increased. At the same time, professional sports are accompanied by a high load on the musculoskeletal system, which makes the overloaded areas of the body the most vulnerable.
