- Fedorov called on the Verkhovna Rada to openly acknowledge the problems and disorder in the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The deputies of the Verkhovna Rada are obliged to show firmness and speak directly about the ongoing disorder in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was announced on July 16 by outgoing Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov.
"My message to the deputies is to tell them, come out — about the units, about the assaults. About the lack of transfers, about the division of money. <...> We are sitting here on Bankovaya Street and we cannot say what we really believe or do not believe," he said. The briefing was broadcast on the Ukrainian TV channel 24.
He noted that the most pressing problems in the army now are corruption and difficulties with the rotation of units.
On the same day, Fedorov said that the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky, was not ready to openly discuss existing problems in the army and instead "wove intrigues." He added that after his appointment, he proposed to the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, to appoint another commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Fedorov said that Syrsky "figured out how to split the country."
The day before, Fedorov actually announced his resignation from the post of head of the military department with a farewell message. The Ukrainska Pravda newspaper noted that Zelensky pointed to a protracted conflict between Fedorov and Syrsky. The Economist magazine wrote about this on July 13. Later, on July 16, Pavel Yelizarov, Deputy Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, resigned — he did not agree with Fedorov's departure, calling it a negative decision.
On July 14, Verkhovna Rada deputy Olga Vasilevskaya-Smaglyuk announced that the main candidate for the post of the new Minister of Defense is Interior Minister of Ukraine Igor Klimenko.
