- Britain called on FIFA to investigate the incident with the Falklands banner at the World Cup
The International Football Federation (FIFA) should investigate the actions of Argentine football players who unfurled a banner in support of the country's claims to the disputed Falkland Islands after defeating England in the semi-finals of the World Cup. This was announced on July 16 by British Business Minister Peter Kyle.
"Politics should stay away from football. This is a very clear principle of the World Cup. But any consequences that result from this now require a decision from FIFA. <...> I definitely think FIFA should take care of this. Absolutely it should," he said on the Fox News channel.
According to the FIFA disciplinary regulations, the demonstration of any political statements and slogans during official tournaments is strictly prohibited.
The Falkland Archipelago (Malvinas Islands in Spanish—speaking countries) is officially a self-governing overseas territory of Great Britain, located 460 km off the coast of Argentina.
In 1982, there was a conflict between the two countries over sovereignty over the islands, which lasted for more than two months. As a result, London regained control of the territory, losing over 250 troops, while the losses of Buenos Aires amounted to about 650 people.
The incident occurred a day earlier during the match between the British and Argentine national teams, as a result of which the latter won with a score of 2:1, securing an exit to the final of the FIFA World Cup. Then the winners unfurled a political poster with the inscription "The Malvinas Islands belong to Argentina."
The BBC TV channel reported the next day that the football federation could impose a large monetary fine on the Argentine Football Association for provocative actions by players, while it was solely about financial sanctions against the national federation, and not about the disqualification of specific athletes.
