Nebenzia said Russia expects Guterres' successor to be objective about Ukraine

Russia expects the future Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) to be more objective on the topic of the Ukrainian crisis in comparison with the position of the current head of the organization, Antonio Guterres. This was announced on July 16 by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the world Organization Vasily Nebenzya.

The term of office of Antonio Guterres as the UN administrative head expires on December 31, 2026. At the moment, six candidates are applying for the vacant position.

"Whichever one of them is elected, we expect that he will treat the Ukrainian crisis more objectively than the current Secretary General treats him," the diplomat said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Will the new faces in this race affect the positions of the main contenders?

Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on June 22 that the new UN Secretary-General needed to correct Guterres' mistakes, including changing the existing imbalance in the structure of the organization's secretariat. He stressed that the trust of the conflicting parties is a key resource of the negotiation process, however, in his assessment, it is being undermined in the current conditions.
