- The US State Department has approved the possible sale of almost $2 billion worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia.
The US State Department has approved the possible sale to Saudi Arabia of up to 20,000 missile guidance kits worth a total of $1.96 billion. This was announced on July 15 on the agency's website.
"The US Department of State has decided to approve the possible sale of high-precision weapons systems and related equipment to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as part of the foreign military sales program. The estimated total cost is $1.96 billion," the publication says.
The kingdom's authorities have requested permission to purchase up to 10,000 APKWS-II laser guidance kits for air—to-air missiles and a similar number of air—to-ground missile systems.
In addition to guidance systems, the American side is ready to provide Riyadh with related logistical support. The list of planned weapons transfers includes LAU-131 A/A launchers, Mk-152 combat units and other systems.
American leader Donald Trump said on July 7 that the United States would consider the possibility of supplying Turkey with F-35 fighter jets, as this could help strengthen relations between the two countries. He noted that the final decision on this issue has not yet been made.
