Sobyanin named Academician Zilber after one of the streets in the north-west of Moscow.

Akademika Zilber Street has appeared in the Shchukino district in the north-west of Moscow. This was announced on Wednesday, July 15, according to the website of the Moscow City Hall.

The unnamed passage between Picturesque and Gamaleya Streets was named after an outstanding microbiologist, the founder of the Soviet school of medical virology, academician Lev Zilber. The corresponding decree was signed by Sergei Sobyanin, the Moscow City News Agency reports.

Lev Zilber was born in 1894, graduated from the Medical Faculty of the Imperial Moscow University and led the elimination of outbreaks of typhoid fever, plague and smallpox in the 1920s and 1930s. He also led an expedition, during which the nature of tick-borne encephalitis was established and methods of combating this disease were proposed, writes Moscow 24.

Later, the scientist worked in leading scientific institutes of the country, and in 1961 he created the first department of general immunology and oncology in the USSR. In addition, Silber participated in the work of the World Health Organization and international scientific conferences on oncovirusology and oncoimmunology.
