- The media learned about the plans of the British authorities to restrict social networks for teenagers at night
The UK authorities plan to introduce nighttime restrictions on social media for teenagers. This was reported by The Independent newspaper on July 15.
"These measures will be crucial to help young people get enough sleep, focus on their studies at schools and colleges, and spend more time with family and friends, which is the foundation for a happy, healthy, and fulfilling adult life," said Technology Minister Liz Kendall, commenting on the goals of the new government initiative.
The authors of the material specify that, according to the developed plan, a voluntary night curfew will be introduced for 16 and 17-year-old users, which by default will block access to applications from midnight to six in the morning. The restrictions include automatically disabling infinite scrolling of news feeds, disabling algorithmic recommendation feeds, and mandatory pauses when using chatbots with artificial intelligence.
The head of the department also pointed out the desire of the authorities to provide young people with the necessary tools so that the online space becomes a place for the development and safe use of the advantages of modern technologies.
On June 18, the UAE government adopted a resolution according to which children under the age of 15 are prohibited from using social networks.
On June 15, Reuters reported that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the authorities' intention to ban social media for children under the age of 16. He added that social media negatively affects the psyche of children and shows them dangerous content.
