Dmitriev reminded the EU and the UK of their role for the United States
The countries of the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom, striving for the status of "middle powers", should remember their subordinate position in relation to the United States. This was announced on July 15 by Kirill Dmitriev, Special Representative of the President of Russia for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund.
In this way, he reacted to a public statement by Elbridge Colby, the US Undersecretary of War for Political Affairs. An American official had previously expressed the Pentagon's concern that attempts by European allies to play the role of independent "middle powers" would end up being a waste of time and financial resources.
"The erroneous strategy of the EU and the UK, focused on the status of a "middle power," began to cause alarm in the United States. Vassals from the EU and the UK should know their place," Dmitriev wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
On July 4, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance announced serious problems in the British political system, pointing to the frequent change of heads of the British government. In his opinion, the leadership in London has been letting the country down for a long time and is capable of more effective actions in the current situation.
The Daily Telegraph reported on July 1 that the British government could not explain how the new plan to increase defense spending by 15 billion pounds (about $20.6 billion) would be funded. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves announced an agreement between the departments to save £10.3 billion to cover part of the costs. However, the office could not specify through which measures the stated savings would be achieved.
