- The skeleton of a tyrannosaurus was sold at auction in the USA for a record $ 50.13 million.
The skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex was sold at Sotheby's in New York for a record $50,130,000 for such lots. This was confirmed on July 14 by data on the auction website.
The remains of a lizard named Gus in honor of a landowner from South Dakota, on whose site the bones were discovered in 2021, went under the hammer. The ancient predator lived about 67 million years ago. The length of its body reaches about 11.5 m, and its height is about 3.8 m.
Sotheby's noted that this specimen is one of the most complete among the lizards of this species: during the excavations, 61% of all dinosaur bones were found. According to experts, at the time of his death, Gus was a very large and adult individual. The researchers also found bite marks from other tyrannosaurs on his skeleton.
Initially, the value of the lot was estimated by experts in the range of $ 20-30 million, but the final price exceeded expectations by almost two times.
Earlier, on June 18, it was reported that a document signed by Joseph Stalin in 1944 was sold in the United States at the RR Auction. The lot was presented as a "World War II document on the defense of liberated Eastern Europe signed by Joseph Stalin" and sold for $13,764.
