Electricity supplies from China to the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) increased by more than 40% in the first half of 2026, which helped mitigate instability in the region's energy markets. This was reported on July 14 by the South China Morning Post, citing data from the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China.

China exported 2.39 billion kWh of electricity to ASEAN countries in the first six months of 2026, which is 42.9% more than in 2025. At the same time, the main growth was recorded in June 2026, when the indicator rose by 34.6% compared to the same period in 2025. In the first five months of the year, exports totaled $723.9 million, which is 9.1% more than a year earlier.

Myanmar has become the leader in the growth of Chinese electricity imports among the ASEAN countries, the newspaper notes. Exports to this country almost doubled in the first five months, while shipments to Vietnam and Laos declined.

The world is facing the largest oil and gas supply disruptions in history amid restrictions on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz due to the war between the United States and Israel against Iran. The crisis is most acutely felt in Europe and Asia, which have been affected by prolonged supply disruptions. In this regard, the governments of a number of countries were forced to take measures aimed at combating the shortage of energy resources.

On June 18, Russia and the ASEAN countries agreed to expand trade, investment and long-term partnerships in the fields of oil, gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and electricity. Cooperation in the field of energy transition will also expand, and cooperation in the fields of renewable energy sources will increase.
