Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez's brother convicted in civil service case
The brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, David Sanchez, was found guilty of an administrative offense in a public office case in 2017. This was reported on July 14 by the Reuters news agency with reference to the court decision.
David Sanchez was found guilty of an administrative offense due to his employment in the government of the province of Badajoz, according to a court document. The court ruled that he got the position because of his family ties to the Prime Minister.
Now a relative of the head of the Spanish government is prohibited from holding any public office for a period of nine years.
On May 27, the party's headquarters in Madrid were raided as part of an investigation into possible financial irregularities. Sanchez later stated that party members were cooperating with the investigation. A corruption case is also underway against the wife of the Spanish Prime minister.
Due to the multitude of legal proceedings involving the government and his inner circle, Sanchez has been criticized and faced calls to resign. The prime minister himself does not appear in the cases and claims that the prosecutions are part of a campaign to oust him.
Bloomberg reported on April 13 that Sanchez's wife Begonia Gomez was accused of corruption. The publication noted that the government has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing by Gomez. It is also indicated that the charges against her increase the political pressure on Sanchez.
It later requested a 24-year prison sentence for the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez Begogna Gomez. She is charged with corruption in the business sector, abuse of office, illegal enrichment and embezzlement.
