Rzeczpospolita: EU may ban entry of Ukrainians to be mobilized

The European Union will change the rules for granting temporary protection to Ukrainian citizens by introducing a requirement for a document of exemption from mobilization for entry into European countries. This was reported on July 13 by the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita.

"Ukrainians in need of military assistance will no longer be allowed to enter the European Union," the article says.

According to the publication, in July the European Commission may submit amendments to the Directive on Temporary Protection, which was adopted in 2022 for Ukrainian refugees. The new rules are expected to take effect in the spring of 2027.

According to the draft amendments, Ukrainian citizens will need a certificate of exemption from mobilization issued by the Ukrainian authorities to enter Poland and other EU countries, as well as to obtain temporary protection. It is noted that the requirement will also apply to women.

Rzeczpospolita reported on July 13 that the Polish authorities are preparing to tighten the rules for obtaining citizenship, which will greatly affect Ukrainians applying for it. The project involves four "key changes". The first one provides for an extension of the required period of residence in Poland to eight years. A citizenship test will also be introduced, which will be conducted in Polish at the B2 level. Foreigners will be required to be "fluent in Polish and understand complex texts."
