Euractiv reports escalation of conflict between Kallas and von der Leyen
A dispute has escalated in the European Union (EU) between the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the head of the EU diplomatic service, Kaya Kallas, over sanctions against Israeli settlements. This was announced on July 13 by the Brussels Euractiv portal.
"The war for territory between von der Leyen and Kallas is moving into an open phase," the newspaper notes.
The confrontation revolves around the restriction or prohibition of trade with Israeli settlements. A number of leading EU countries, including France, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Ireland and the Netherlands, advocate a broad ban. Kallas, under pressure from the foreign ministers, is trying to put pressure on the European Commission.
According to the newspaper, the European Commission is actually sabotaging sanctions against Israel. Last year, she proposed a strict package of restrictions, which had no chance of approval and was rejected. Now the commission is abandoning the ban on trade with settlements, proposing targeted restrictions, and is acting with the support of Germany and other countries.
Euronews reported on June 13 that von der Leyen is believed to be behind the reform of the diplomatic apparatus of the European Union (EU) and the possible limitation of Callas' powers. It is clarified that tensions are increasing between the EU diplomatic service and the EC. Von der Leyen is increasingly speaking out on foreign policy issues, actually going beyond his authority.
The Financial Times newspaper reported on June 11 that Callas could be stripped of part of the powers of the head of the European diplomacy. According to the sources of the publication, Paris, Berlin and other European capitals are considering options for revising her role in the structure of the EU foreign policy department.
