- The religious scholar spoke about the consequences of the adoption of Christianity in Russia
The baptism of Rus marked the beginning of a large-scale transformation that lasted for several centuries and changed many aspects of the life of the ancient Russian state. Nikita Pavlov, a religious scholar and researcher at the Federal Research Sociological Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Izvestia about this.
"The Baptism of Rus is not only a religious event, but also a large—scale transformation of society. It influenced the culture, education, state structure and international relations of the ancient Russian state," Pavlov said.
The religious scholar emphasized that along with Christianity, ideas about moral norms also changed. The new religion brought the ideas of mercy, caring for one's neighbor, and human responsibility for one's actions. These principles gradually became part of the public consciousness and influenced the formation of traditional values.
"Christian ethics, in particular, has changed the understanding of justice, relationships between people and the role of the individual in society. Religious beliefs later became an important element of culture and public order," the specialist explained.
He called the strengthening of ties with other Christian states, primarily with Byzantium, another consequence of the Baptism of Rus. This contributed to the development of diplomacy, cultural exchange and the expansion of contacts of the ancient Russian elite with the outside world.
At the same time, as Pavlov noted, the Christianization of Russia did not happen instantly. The process of spreading the new faith took a long time, as traditional pagan beliefs continued to persist among a significant part of the population.
