A Spanish court has ruled it lawful to revoke access to state secrets for a sergeant in the country's Navy who served as an electronic warfare specialist on the S-70 Galerna submarine. This was reported by the newspaper El Pais on July 10.
As the court found, the Ukrainian-born military man secretly married a Russian woman in Turkey, and also obtained Russian citizenship after 2014, without notifying Madrid about it and thus violating security rules. Local intelligence saw unacceptable risks and conflicts of interest in the actions of the submariner, especially after the officer explicitly stated his intention to refuse to participate in hostilities in the event of a hypothetical military clash between Spain and Russia.
An additional factor against the sergeant was the systematic violation of the secrecy regime on the Internet. The soldier maintained open profiles on social networks. The man himself explained the account management by searching for acquaintances exclusively with women of Slavic origin because of common life values.
On June 13, the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Marseille, Stanislav Oransky, announced that a Russian child adopted by French citizens more than 15 years ago had his bank account blocked because of his place of birth. According to the diplomat, Russian citizens can often find themselves in absurd situations when interacting with banks and government institutions in France.
