In Poland, Russian spouses were sentenced to seven and three years in prison.

The District Court in Sosnowiec, Poland, sentenced a married couple from Russia, Igor and Irina R., to seven and three years in prison, respectively, for allegedly spying for the Russian Federation. This was announced on July 9 by the Polish TV channel TVP.

"Igor R. was found guilty on both counts: firstly, of participating in the activities of foreign intelligence. <...> Secondly, of creating an immediate threat to the life and health of many people," the publication says.

Igor and Irina R. were arrested in July 2024 and have been in custody ever since. The indictment was filed with the Sosnowiec District Court in October 2025. The trial began in January 2026. From the very beginning, it was held behind closed doors. The request to exclude the public was motivated by security concerns, the Polish National Prosecutor's Office explained.

Russian archaeologist Alexander Butyagin, who was held in a Polish prison, told Izvestia on April 30 that the judicial machine in Poland was rather gloomy, prisoners from other countries were unhappy with the content and said that "this is not the European Union, that everything is wrong here and everything is organized wrong." According to him, no one in prison had any doubts that he was detained for political reasons. At the same time, the court strongly denied that his case had anything to do with politics.
