Reuters has learned about the Rheinmetall and MBDA laser weapons contract for the German Navy

Rheinmetall and its partner MBDA have signed a contract worth several hundred million euros with the German military equipment agency for the development of a laser weapon system for the Navy. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on July 9.

The system, which will be mass-produced mainly in Germany, is expected to be operational by 2029, Rheinmetall said.

On July 4, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced a shortage of military equipment. According to him, the defense industry is gradually increasing its production capacity, but even faster logistics is required for the rapid delivery of equipment directly to positions or ports.

Prior to that, Pistorius, at a meeting with military personnel in Friesland, said that Germany intends to invest about €16 billion in the development of protection systems against unmanned aerial vehicles by the end of the decade.
