Russian companies are increasingly evaluating artificial intelligence (AI) not as a fashionable technology, but as a tool with a measurable economic effect. That is why the mass adoption of AI is still slower than expected: it is important for businesses to understand how much a project will bring and in what time frame it will pay off. Dmitry Pilipenko, Deputy General Director of LANSOFT IT holding, told Izvestia about this on July 12.

The expert called one of the main obstacles not artificial intelligence itself, but the unpreparedness of internal processes. Before launching AI, many organizations have to put data in order, unify reference books, and build an accounting system. Often, such preparatory work is more expensive than the actual implementation of the technology.

"The cost of projects remains an additional factor. Using cloud models requires fixed costs, and local deployment involves the purchase of equipment, the involvement of specialists and further technical support. For companies operating in low—competitive segments, such investments do not always look economically justified," explained Pilipenko.

Another problem remains the lack of a clear understanding of where artificial intelligence can actually bring tangible benefits to businesses. According to Pilipenko, many projects are launched without a specific task and predefined performance indicators, which is why they do not meet expectations and increase the skepticism of managers.

The most noticeable effect of AI is demonstrated where processes are regularly repeated, and the result can be measured. In retail, technology helps to predict demand more accurately and reduce write-offs, while in industry it helps to prevent equipment breakdowns through predictive maintenance systems. In document management and accounting, artificial intelligence automates document verification and reduces the number of errors, in customer service it takes over the processing of standard requests, and in logistics it allows you to optimize routes and use transport capacity more efficiently.

The expert also believes that business interest in AI will continue even if the labor market stabilizes and wage growth slows. In this case, the key advantage of the technology will not be saving on staff, but increasing employee productivity.

According to Pilipenko, this is especially noticeable today in software development: specialists using AI tools are able to perform a much larger amount of work. At the same time, those companies that consider artificial intelligence as a means of enhancing the professional competencies of employees, rather than as their replacement, receive the maximum return.

On July 7, State Duma deputies at a plenary session adopted in the second and third readings a government bill to support the development of artificial intelligence technologies. In an explanatory note, the parliamentarians pointed out that the document is aimed at creating legal conditions for the accelerated development and implementation of large fundamental AI models in the Russian Federation.
