The current heat wave in the United States and the world is caused by human activity, not by natural cycles or fluctuations in solar activity. This was announced on July 9 by climatologist and professor of Texas Tech University Catherine Hayhoe.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, she stressed that the current rate of global warming is unprecedented in the history of mankind. About 75% of this process is caused by greenhouse emissions from the combustion of petroleum products, gas and coal. The rest is related to the reduction of forests, the agricultural sector and changes in land use.

The expert explained that natural factors, including volcanic eruptions and solar cycles, cannot explain the current temperature records. Moreover, with the exclusion of anthropogenic influence, the planet should now be showing a tendency towards gradual cooling.

At the same time, Heiho noted that ways to overcome the crisis already exist. These include the development of clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and investments in nature conservation.

"A better future is possible, but these heat waves are a warning signal that it's time to act," she urged.
