Conor McGregor is an Irish mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, the first in the history of the promotion to hold two championship belts at the same time. About the life, career and achievements of the athlete — in the material of "Izvestia".

Childhood and the path to martial arts

Conor Anthony McGregor was born on July 14, 1988 in the Dublin suburb of Crumlin (Ireland). From an early age, he was fond of sports and played football, playing for the local club Lourdes Celtic.

As a teenager, the family moved to Lucan, where McGregor began to master boxing. Later, he became interested in mixed martial arts and in 2006 began training under the guidance of future long-term mentor John Kavanagh at the Straight Blast Gym Ireland club. Before joining professional sports, Conor worked as a plumber, combining work with training.

The beginning of McGregor's professional career

McGregor made his professional MMA debut in 2008. In the early years, he competed in Irish and British tournaments, gradually gaining a reputation as one of the most promising fighters in Europe.

In 2012, McGregor became the Cage Warriors champion in both featherweight and lightweight, becoming the first fighter in the promotion to hold two titles at the same time. It was after this success that he got a contract with the UFC.

Conor McGregor's UFC Career

McGregor made his debut in the world's largest mixed martial arts organization in 2013, defeating Marcus Brimage by technical knockout in the first round. A series of spectacular victories quickly made the Irishman one of the main stars of the UFC.

In December 2015, McGregor won the UFC featherweight title by knocking out Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds — this fight remains the fastest title fight in the history of the organization.

In November 2016, the Irishman defeated Eddie Alvarez and became the first UFC fighter to simultaneously hold championship belts in two weight categories. McGregor later had some of the most commercially successful fights in the history of the promotion, including confrontations with Khabib Nurmagomedov, Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz.

McGregor's boxing match with Floyd Mayweather

In 2017, McGregor made his professional boxing debut, facing former world champion Floyd Mayweather. Despite losing by technical knockout in the tenth round, the bout became one of the most lucrative in the history of world sports and brought both athletes multimillion-dollar royalties.

Career break

Conor McGregor's last official fight was in July 2021 against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. At the end of the first round, the Irishman suffered a severe fracture of his left leg, which prevented him from continuing the fight and he lost by technical knockout. After that, the athlete underwent surgery and began a long recovery process.

UFC 329 Tournament

In the summer of 2026, Conor McGregor returns to the octagon after almost a five-year hiatus. The main event of the UFC 329 tournament was his rematch with former featherweight champion Max Holloway, whom the Irishman had already defeated in 2013. The fight topped the main card and became one of the most anticipated events of the year in the world of mixed martial arts.

Personal life

Conor McGregor is in a relationship with Dee Devlin, whom he met before his sporting fame began. The couple has four children, and Devlin remains one of the athlete's closest assistants and participates in the development of his commercial projects.

Outside of the octagon, McGregor is known for his vivid image, emotional statements, and social media activity. At the same time, his career was repeatedly accompanied by high-profile conflicts, court proceedings and disciplinary sanctions, which regularly became the subject of discussion in the world media. Despite the long pauses in performances, the Irishman continues to be one of the most recognizable and discussed figures in the history of mixed martial arts.
